Novamedia Gaming becomes latest Dutch licensee

Novamedia Gaming has gained the sixteenth licence issued by the Dutch Gaming Authority, Kansspelautoriteit, in a move which sees the group permitted to offer games of chance via the internet.

However, despite granting the firm its latest licence, the regulator adds that the domain name with which Novamedia Gaming will operate is not yet known.

The company has long been touting its intention to participate in the country’s online gambling marketplace, with Novemedia asserting its application intentions one year ago amid a desire to develop “a distinctive offer” adding that it will “choose its own route”.

In September 2021, the firm noted that it intended to “seize the opportunity to also contribute to a strong civil society – and a better, greener and fairer world for everyone – through online games”.

This comment was made as Novemedia confirmed that it was in a phase of developing and testing “distinctive online games,” in compliance with the regulations for responsible gaming.

Novamedia launched the Nationale Postcode Loterij (Dutch Postcode Lottery) in 1989 to raise money for charity organisations. In 2005, the success of this prompted the debut of Svenska Postkodlotteriet in Sweden and People’s Postcode Lottery in Great Britain.

This was subsequently added to via the launch of Deutsche Postcode Lotterie in Germany during 2016, and Norsk Postkodelotteri in Norway two years later.

Michiel Verboven, CCO of Novamedia, previously said of the group’s Dutch intentions: “Once, the Postcode Lotteries were pioneers in sharing our mission with a broad audience through large television shows and in connecting players to our lotteries. Online games are a new medium.

“We believe we can use this opportunity in a safe and responsible manner to offer the kind of fun and entertainment that fits our brands, so we maintain our high contribution to society, raised by our loyal players.”

The official launch of the Dutch online gambling environment on October 1, 2021, saw the Ksa grant an initial ten licenses, which saw the Toto Online brand of Nederlandse Loterij; Dutch arcade group FPO Netherlands; Holland Casino; and NSUS Malta, which counts GGPoker as part of its stable; all gain approvals.

Further entrants include Estonia’s Play North, operator of the Rocket Casino and Pikakasino brands, bingo operator Tombola, bet365; Belgian brand Bingoal, Italy’s Betent; and LiveScore Malta

Further entrants have included Casino de Spa; JVH gaming and entertainment’s Joi Gaming, Joi I and Joi II, and ZEbetting & Gaming Netherlands.
